These are purposeful, meaningful, and challenging situations and they engage all aspects of learning: psychomotor, emotional, social, language, cognitive and methodological.  Go to page

Framework for the Evaluation of Learning

As set out in the Basic school regulation, the student’s results in preschool education must be given as marks on the report card showing the status of the development of the competencies during the school year or, at the end of the school year, the level of competency development achieved by the student. Go to page

Steam in Kindergarten

In 2017, LEARN consultant Christiane Dufour worked with three experienced kindergarten teachers from the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board (Christiane Karamanoukian, Loretta Cianci and Natalie Losier) to develop a play-based approach to STEAM that is compatible with the level of development of Preschool Education children as well as with the spirit and the letter of the Preschool Education Programme. As a result of that year-long project, four sequential case studies emerged.

Kindergarten Competencies in Action: Videos

Observation is the favoured means of evaluation for preschool education. When children are observed in natural situations and in different learning contexts, we can see a rich variety of behaviours, attitudes, processes, strategies and productions related to the competencies. Here are video clips that bring our program to life by showing examples of typical observations that meet them.

These video clips are organised according to the key features of each competency and their corresponding evaluation criteria. In some cases they also illustrate elements of the outcomes at the end of preschool education for the competency. All in all, they illustrate what you can see when assessing development.

Learning and Play in Kindergarten

Play is considered to be so essential to healthy development that the United Nations has recognized it as a specific right for all children. Why is it so important? What do children learn through play? And mostly, what do we mean by play?

Questions about Preschool Education

Questions and issues submitted by teachers. Answers were provided by school board and ministry consultants.

  • Should children be playing still in kindergarten?
In fact, this brings up 5 questions often encountered by preschool educators: What is play? What are its benefits? Is it really needed? Haven’t they played enough in daycare? Shouldn’t we focus on learning to read and write earlier?

  • Are teachers allowed to plan a progressive entry for kindergarten?
Provisions that allow implementation of progressive entry at the beginning of the Preschool year are now included (in annex) in the teachers’ collective agreement. The main objective of progressive entry is to help the children bond with their teacher.

  • Should my expectations for a K child be subordinate to the expectations of the cycle 1 teacher?
What should your expectations be for a Kindergarten child at the end of a school year? Should they be the same as those of any other K teacher or should they be subordinate to the expectations of the cycle 1 teacher(s) in your school

  • What is the difference between kindergarten and daycare?

That's a question that all kindergarten teachers have had to answer at one point or another. Although often phrased differently, this question targets the specific nature of kindergarten, its mandate, the learning done by children and the role of the teacher.

  • Preschool teaching time is less than Elementary teaching time. How does that affect preschool children?

Teaching time at elementary has gone up from 23h30 to 25 hours a week. Even though pre-school time was not increased, this change has a direct impact on K children since they often now also have de facto increased school presence time.
